The R word.
I found it pretty unsettling at first.
She slid it into the conversation. Nonchalantly. And I didn’t really understand its meaning.
You see, I was training for my first marathon.
I’d never run a marathon before. Ann, my amazing wife and business partner, had run a bunch of them.
She created this training plan for us.
Each day, neatly plotted out on a grid, like a calendar.
Saturday run 16 miles; Sunday 10.
Monday: R.
R?
“A rest day,” she explained.
“But we’re runners,” I protested. “Runners run. AND, we’re getting ready for a race!”
“But, strong runners rest; especially if they want to run long races.”
That caused me to scratch my bald head.
There is a lot of fatigue in the world right now.
So much weariness.
Peak performers often see fatigue as weakness.
‘Pain is weakness leaving the body,’ the old trope goes.
So they muscle through.
But that makes it really tough to go the distance.
So, when you’re tired, use the R word. In fact, even when you don’t think you’re tired, use the R word.
REST.
