There are times when you need to just let the floor be a little dirty and wear gray socks.
When you are a brand new mom with a helpless human to keep alive, mopping your floors is not high on the list of things to get done. Let’s be honest, even getting to take a shower is hardly on the list.
Those first few weeks of having a spanking new infant, taking off my once white socks at the end of the day and having to look at one more piece of evidence that showed my lack of keeping up with everything around the house was making me feel guilty. So when I complained to my friend about my dirty socks, she advised me to just get gray socks.
She was right. Who cares if the floors aren’t mopped? Eventually I would get to clean the floors well, but in the meantime, I should just find a workaround. A simple fix that would stop me from feeling inept every day. So I bought myself some gray socks.
It’s good to cut yourself some slack when you are down in it. Whatever “it” may be. So the floors were swept, but they weren’t mopped. So the laundry is clean but it’s not folded. So the dinner is cereal; it’s still nutritious.
Grant yourself some grace when you are in those tough seasons. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good, especially if it means you will feel guilty if it’s not perfect.
Remind yourself that it’s okay to wear gray socks if it means you’ll preserve your sanity.
If you are having trouble seeing the gray socks as an option, maybe it’s time to get a little perspective with a coach. Let’s talk and see if working together would be a good fit.
(By the way, that is a picture of my sock drawer today. Gray socks became my go to purchase even after the babies were tiny. Don’t fix it if it isn’t broken!)
